The great Walter Röhrl

Walter Röhrl, born 7 March 1947, is a German rally and auto racing driver, with victories for Fiat, Opel, Lancia and Audi as well as Porsche, Ford and BMW. Competitive on all kind of surfaces, including on closed race tracks, which is rare for rally drivers, he is seen here-above sitting next to a Renault 5 Turbo he was racing in the European Cup in 1981.

The great and tall (1.96m) Walter Röhrl has scored 14 World Rally Championship victories, including 4 Monte Carlo Rally victories for 4 different manufacturers, and took the drivers’ title twice in 1980 and 1982. He is often regarded as one of the greatest rally drivers of all time.

He also competed in other forms of motorsport, such as endurance racing, winning in the GTP +3.0 class in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1981 for Porsche. Röhrl also set the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record in 1987 driving an Audi Sport Quattro S1. Since many years now, he’s a test driver and ambassador for Porsche.
