We are very saddened to report the death at the age of 73 of former Formula 1 driver and two-time Grand Prix winner Patrick Tambay. The French driver was widely admired as one of the most charming and charismatic racers of the late 70s and early 80s, a real gentleman from the golden age of F1.

Born on June 25 1949 in Paris and educated in France and in the United States, Tambay made 114 Grand Prix starts for the Surtees, Theodore, McLaren, Ligier, Ferrari, Renault and Lola Haas teams.

He appeared on the podium on 11 occasions, and took two wins while driving for Ferrari after replacing his friend, the late Gilles Villeneuve, mid-season in 1982. Tambay took his maiden victory at the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim, his car bearing the legendary number 27. It was a particularly emotional win.

Patrick Tambay competed regularly on the Paris-Dakar, twice finishing in the top three, and won two titles in the Can-Am series in 1977 and 1980 with Carl Haas Racing (picture below).

  1. Oui, c’est triste et il était malgré tout encore bien jeune, saleté de Parkinson.
    RIP Monsieur Tambay !
