Masten Gregory

Barely 20 years old, Masten Gregory (1932-1985) finds himself at the head of a healthy family fortune and decides to invest it in his passion, car racing, and as soon as 1952, participates in the Sebring 12 Hours.

The American progresses to Formula 1, and in 1957 achieves the feat of finishing third in the Monaco Grand Prix, for his third appearance only in F1. Two years later, he finishes second in the Portuguese Grand Prix.

In eight seasons in F1, Masten Gregory participates in 37 Grand Prix and obtains three podiums with Maserati, Cooper and Lotus. He also takes 16 start at the 24 Hours of Le Mans between 1955 and 1972, only sees the finish four times, but wins the race in 1965 with Jochen Rindt, in a Ferrari 250LM (picture below).

Very much affected by the death of his friend Jo Bonnier during the 1972 Le Mans 24 Hours, he decides to retire from motor racing and becomes diamond trader. The one that Caroll Shelby nicknamed “the Kansas City Flash” will succumb of a heart attack at the age of 53.
