Justin Wilson
Justin Wilson (1978-2015) was an English racing driver who competed in Formula One in 2003 with Minardi and Jaguar, then in Champ Car from 2004 to 2007 and in IndyCar from 2008 to 2015. Tragically, he died at the Pocono circuit when debris from a crashed car struck his helmet at high speed.
Winner of the Formula Palmer Audi and F3000 championships, his promising career was nevertheless slowed by his great stature – at the time, the cockpits of single-seaters were more suited to drivers of jockey stature – but as soon as he tried his luck in the United States, Wilson had the opportunity to express himself perfectly with podiums and victories in Champ Car before joining IndyCar in the excellent Newman/Haas/Lanigan team.
In his first season in IndyCar, he achieved a moving debut victory in Detroit, just weeks before the death of the team’s co-founder and legendary actor, Paul Newman.
Justin Wilson ‘s three IndyCar victories were achieved on three different types of circuits – road, street and oval – proving that he was fast and versatile, a versatility he further demonstrated by winning the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2012. An excellent and amicable racing driver, sadly missed;
