John Watson, from Northern Ireland, seen here in 1982, competed in Formula 1 between 1973 and 1985, won 5 Grand Prix and was 20 times on the podium. In F1 he drove for Brabham, Surtees, Lotus, Penske and McLaren.
He was one of the fastest drivers on the grid in 1976, winning the Austrian Grand Prix in the sole Penske, and in 1977 where he should have won races in the Brabham-Alfa, but reliability prevented him to do so. But fast he was. He was third in the 1982 F1 World Championship, his best result, in a McLaren-Ford, thanks to his experience and consistency.
