David Piper, born on December 2, 1930, is an English racing driver who began his career in 1954 in hill climbs driving a Lotus Eleven, and who quickly climbed the ranks of motorsport, making a name for himself in endurance races such as Le Mans – 3rd with Masten Gregory in 1963 in a Ferrari 250 GTO/LMB and second in 1968 with Richard Attwood in a Ferrari 250 LM (photo below).

He will also be seen in F2 and then in Formula 1, 2 Grand Prix starts in 1959 and 1960 in a privately-entered Lotus 16, without however managing to score any points in the championship.

Between 1962 and 1970, David Piper raced all over the world, mainly in endurance racing at the wheel of his Ferraris, but also later in Porsches, always painted green, first in homage to his sponsor BP, then making this colour, British racing green, his own, which he liked so much.

In 1970, Piper was involved in a serious accident in which, while driving a Porsche 917, he lost half a leg during the filming of Steve McQueen’s Le Mans. Despite this, he continued to race his green racing cars, and at 95, still owns a magnificent collection of historic racing cars.
