Mind your head!

The new Ferrari’s 512S, just assembled in Maranello end of January, and then swiftly shipped to the USA for the 24 Hours of Daytona. Dan Gurney, shares the one allocated to the NART team with Chuck Parsons, seen here at the wheel.

Because the Californian is very tall, the team had to modify the roof for the driver to fit in the car. The hastily done modification is not the prettiest, but is so necessary to fit the driver and his helmet!

Behind the car, one can see the Porsche 917 of Tony Dean-Peter Gregg, a car smuggled out of customs at the Miami airport, on it’s way back from Buenos Aires, where it had competed in the 1000 km race, driven by it’s owner David Piper, who was very surprised to see his car appear on the banking here in Florida…

Watching all this is Jack Brabham (left, hands in the pocket of his white overall), laughing gently at the scene. The Australian champion shares a Matra MS650 with François Cevert. The pair will finish the race in 10th position (picture below), while the Ferrari of Gurney and Parsons will retire with gearbox issues.
