Arturo Merzario, born in 1942, started racing in 1962 and in fact never stopped. After his F1 career, he devoted his time in building race cars and continued his career as an all-round racing driver, winning in all categories he participated in.
He was very courageous, when he didn’t hesitate throwing himself into the flames of Niki Lauda’s Ferrari during the 1976 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, and saved the Austrian’s life.
