In the closing stages of the 1996 CART Grand Prix of Monterey, Alex Zanardi, in his Chip Ganassi entered Reynard-Honda, was closing in on the race leader Bryan Herta.

In the last lap, he pulled a daring move around Bryan Herta’s Reynard-Mercedes in the famous downhill Corkscrew to win the race. It was a fantastic and very gutsy move from the Italian, that brought some controversy, because, as you can see on the picture, he put his four wheels off the track.

Luckily, this brave move was not penalized, because it was considered that Zanardi was already in front of Herta by the time he went off track.

Let’s hope the drivers will always be allowed to provide us such a thrilling finale without having the fear of being penalized.
