Rick Mears, Penske PC-16 Chevrolet (pictured above), on his way to a relatively disappointing ninth position at the finish of the 1987 Long Beach Grand Prix, counting towards the CART championship.

Mario Andretti won this event driving his Lola T87/00-Chevrolet entered by Newman Haas Racing ahead of Al Unser Jr in a March 87C-Cosworth entered by Shierson Racing.

Of note was the very fine performance of Belgian Didier Theys who, driving an old Lola T86/00-Cosworth from Newman Teamworks, secured an excellent seventh place at the finish.

Rick Mears will only achieve one victory, at the 1987 Quaker State 500 on the Pocono oval (photo below), in fifteen rounds and will finish fifth in the championship, won by Bobby Rahal and his Lola T87/00 of Truesports Racing.
