In 1995, Jacques Villeneuve, son of the great and regretted Gilles Villeneuve, won the Indy 500 at his second attempt. Driving for Team Green, Villeneuve qualified his Reynard on the second row of the grid. American Scott Brayton was on pole.
On lap 190, at one of the restarts, leader Scott Goodyear passed the pace car while the yellow was on and was assessed a stop-and-go penalty, which handed Jacques Villeneuve the lead and ultimately the victory. Villeneuve’s winning car was powered by the Ford XB engine, it was the powerplant’s first Indy victory after four attempts.
Although a little lucky, this victory was well deserved for the hard charging Canadian who was always within reach of the leaders. A great F1 career awaited him now.
