The Chaparral 2K, in Pennzoil livery, designed by the talented John Barnard in 1979, was the first ground effect IndyCar, and got its first victory on the short oval of Phoenix, driven by Al Unser Sr, in the last race of the season.
A year later, Barnard had joined Ron Dennis for his Formula 1 project and Jim Hall hired veteran Johnny Rutherford as his lead driver. “JR” swiftly won the Indy 500 at the wheel of the 2K, his third victory on the Speedway, after the ones conquered in 1974 and 1976 with McLaren.
