The Leyton House-March Racing Team, with its drivers Mauricio Gugelmin (far left) and Ivan Capelli talking to their engineers, hard at work around their March 881-Judd, ahead of qualifying for the 1988 Monaco Formula One Grand Prix.

Brazilian Gugelmin did well to qualify in fourteenth position while team mate Italian Capelli was 22nd on the grid but both cars were forced to retire in the race, with mechanical issues. Senna dominated qualifying and race in his McLaren-Honda, had a huge lead until he lost concentration at Portier, spun in the barrier and damaged his front suspension. Victory went to his team mate Prost.

The March team employed a new designer, who would go on to produce many successful F1 cars in his career: Adrian Newey (picture-below) designed the sleek-looking and aerodynamically effective March 881 for the team’s second season back in F1.
