Crowd!
A huge crowd gathered (picture above) around the 22,810 kilometres of the great Nordschleife, for the 1966 1000 km of the Nürburgring. It was round 6 of the World Sportscar Championship.
Picture above: Jochen Rindt and Nino Vaccarella, Porsche 906-8, were forced to retire because of a broken clutch, at the 1000 km of the Nürburgring 1966.
Victory went to the very pretty (picture below) Chaparral 2D-Chevrolet of Joakim Bonnier and Phil Hill, who finished 40 seconds ahead of the Ferrari Dino 206S, driven by Ludovico Scarfiotti and Lorenzo Bandini.
The Chaparral 2D-Chevrolet was a Group 6 sports prototype race car designed and developed by both Jim Hall and Hap Sharp. It was powered by a 5,359 cc all-aluminium V8 naturally aspirated engine, developing 420 hp. The chassis was built in reinforced aluminium and the body in fiberglass.
