Enjoying the fight
John Surtees (Ferrari 512S) and Jean-Pierre Beltoise (Matra MS650) are engaged in a spectacular tussle during the 1970 Monza 1000km (picture-above). Both drivers later declared having enjoyed battling each other ‘fair and square’. Notice the wing placed on the front-end of the Matra.
Mexican driver Pedro Rodriguez won the race in his John Wyer’s Gulf Porsche 917K. He was able to hold off three hard-charging works Ferrari 512’s, after his co-driver Leo Kinnunen lost most of the lead he had built up.
Jean-Pierre Beltoise and Jack Brabham brought their Matra-Simca MS650 home in fifth and won the 3-litre category ahead of the second MS650 driven by Henri Pescarolo and Johnny Servoz-Gavin.
Ex-Ferrari driver John Surtees returned to Ferrari after 4 years to drive a works 512 with Peter Schetty and finished third behind the sister car driven by the Italians Ignazio Giunti and Nino Vaccarella (picture-below).
