The beginnings of “SuperSwede”
Ronnie Peterson (1944-1978), known by the nickname “SuperSwede”, began his motor racing career in kart racing (picture above), traditionally the discipline where the majority of racing drivers begin their journey into motor racing.
After winning a number of karting titles, including two Swedish titles in 1963 and 1964, he moved up to Formula 3, where he won the 1969 Monaco F3 Grand Prix. Formula One teams took notice of this super talented Swede.
Peterson moved up into Formula One in 1970 with the March factory team. In his three-year spell in the Max Mosley and Robin Herd- managed team, he took six podiums, most of which were scored during the 1971 season (picture below), in which he finished runner-up to Jackie Stewart (Tyrrell) in the Drivers’ Championship.
