After impressing in F3 and in F2, Jackie Stewart signed with BRM alongside Graham Hill in 1965 (picture-above), a contract that netted him £4,000. On his World Championship F1 debut in South Africa, he finished sixth and scored one point.
His first major victory came in the BRDC International Trophy in the late spring, and before the end of the year, Stewart won his first World Championship Grand Prix at Monza, fighting wheel- to-wheel with teammate Hill’s P261 (picture-below).
Stewart finished his rookie season with a win, three seconds, a third, a fifth and a sixth, and third place in the World Drivers’ Championship. The Scot had arrived where he belonged, in Formula One, and was there to stay and write history.
