24 Hours of Le Mans 1967. In the pit lane at nightfall, from left to right, we discover a very varied grid which, from a distance, could pass for a Scalextic game: The blue Costin-Nathan no. 54 of Nathan/Beckwith, then the white Ferrari 412P no. 25 of Rodriguez/Baghetti entered by Luigi Chinetti of NART, then the light blue Hrubon no. 68 of Rives/Marnat, then the Ferrari 412P (Scuderia Filipinetti) no. 22 of Guichet/Müller and finally we can make out the Ford GT40 no. 18 (Scuderia Filipinetti) of Maglioli/Casoni.
The 1967 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans was won by the Ford Mk IV No. 1 driven by the American duo Dan Gurney and AJ Foyt. This race is often referred to as the “Race of the Century” due to the intense rivalry between Ford and Ferrari.
Key Events:
- An all-American victory: This is the only time in the history of Le Mans that a car of entirely American design and construction (Ford chassis and engine), with an American team (Shelby-American Inc.) and American drivers, has won the overall victory.
- Domination and records: The Ford Mk IV, a radical evolution from previous models, led the race for most of the 24 hours. The duo set a new distance record, covering 3,267 miles (approximately 5,258 km) at an average speed of 135 mph (approximately 217 km/h).
- The Ford-Ferrari duel: The event marked the culmination of the epic rivalry between Ford and Ferrari. Ford had the power advantage with its Mk IV, while Ferrari presented its 330 P4, representing Italian craftsmanship.
