For 1973, FIAT imposed a new technical staff and engineer Forghieri was transferred to another department, his role being taken by Sandro Colombo coming from Innocenti and Lancia. The chassis was built in England by John Thompson. It was going be a disaster, the car being slow, heavy and unreliable.

During the summer, Forghieri was recalled as technical director and set about revising fundamentally the B3. For 1974, Ferrari fielded a heavily revised car, named 312B3-74 (picture) and signed BRM drivers Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni.

It was the revival of the Scuderia with Niki Lauda winning two races, for one GP victory and great consistency for Regazzoni, who finished a close second to Emerson Fittipaldi (McLaren) in the championship.

Niki Lauda is seen here minutes before taking pole position for his home Grand Prix at Zeltweg. In the race, he had to retire with a blown engine, and victory went to Carlos Reutemann (Brabham).
