Rain over Sicily
The Porsche 906E driven by Gerhard Mitter and Joachim Bonnier passes through a Sicilian village during the 1966 Targa Florio (picture-above). This beautiful 906 will retire on lap 6 due to an accident.
The 50th anniversary edition of the Targa Florio was marred by bad weather that turned the roads into a quagmire. The winners of the 1965 edition, Nino Vaccarella and Lorenzo Bandini started as favorites, driving the powerful, prototype-class works Ferrari 330 P3.
Indeed, they were comfortably leading until two laps from the end, a wrong maneuvre by Bandini while lapping a slower car resulted in the 330 flying off the road. This paved the way of the victory for the factory-backed Scuderia Filipinetti Porsche 906 of Herbert Müller and Willy Mairesse.
