Prost passes by Pau
The 1978 Pau Grand Prix was a Formula 2 race held on 15 May 1978 at the Pau circuit. The race was won by Bruno Giacomelli in a works March 782-BMW. Eje Elgh finished second in a Chevron-Hart and Marc Surer third, in the second works March-BMW.
The entry field was impressive at Pau that year, with future and active F1 stars on the starting grid like: Giacomelli, Surer, Winkelhock, Tambay, Daly, Laffite, Ribeiro, Zunino, Ghinzani, Henton…
Amongst them, Alain Prost, a young French Formula Renault Europe driver, who made a one-off appearance in a Chevron B40-Hart entered by Fred Opert.
Indeed, future 4-time World Champion Alain Prost (picture above and below) qualified an excellent fifth, but retired on lap 6 with engine trouble. He nevertheless, succeeded to impress the bystanders.
