Promising young guns

Two promising young guns (picture-above) align at the XVII Rhein Pokal Rennen 1982 at Hockenheim with Stefan Bellof in the black Maurer MM82 BMW/Rosche alongside Thierry Boutsen in the Spirit 201 Honda. Bellof finished third behind Corrado Fabi (March) and Beppe Gabbiani (Maurer) whilst Boutsen was forced to retire with engine problems. Notice the quite similar helmet designs.

Corrado Fabi won the championship (5 victories) in a works March-BMW after a season-long battle with teammate Johnny Ceccoto (3 wins) and the Spirit-Honda of Thierry Boutsen with 3 victories, at the Nürburgring, Spa and Enna (picture-below). All the drivers mentioned in this article will reach Formula One, but Boutsen will be the only one to win Grand Prix.
