One point only
From 1985 to 1988, French racing driver Olivier Grouillard competed in Formula 3000 taking two wins. In 1989 (picture-above), Grouillard joined the Ligier team in F1 as team-mate to René Arnoux. He qualified 22nd in his first race in Brazil and finished 9th. He then started 17th at his home race at the French Grand Prix and drove to an excellent 6th, scoring his only World Championship point.
He then joined the Osella team for the 1990 and 1991 season when the team was rebranded Fondmetal. The Italian team was financially struggling, meaning Grouillard had to pre-qualify for the races.
He managed to qualify in 8th position in Phoenix in 1990, which amazed many people in Formula One. In the race, he was involved in a collision with Swiss driver Foitek and had to retire. This was a highlight, but the two years at Osella-Fondmetal were difficult ones.
His last season in Formula One was 1992 when Grouillard was taken on by Ken Tyrrell to drive the Ilmor-powered Tyrrell 020b (picture-below) and was partnered with Italian Andrea de Cesaris. He often qualified in the midfield, but his car had quite a few mechanical problems and he did his share of mistakes… he failed to score a point.
He couldn’t find a Formula 1 drive for 1993, so tried his luck in the CART PPG series, finishing 28th overall in the series with 4 points, but failing to qualify for the Indy 500. Unable to make a success in CART, he returned to Europe and sports cars with greater success.
