Three immaculate Ferrari 312 PB‘s, still without any sponsors’ stickers, wait patiently in the Maranello misty morning, to be transported to the Fiorano track, and being tested at full speed, ahead of the 1971 endurance season (picture above).

In 1971, Ferrari focused on a new 3.0L endurance project, based around the Tipo 001 flat-12 engine from the 312B F1 car. Officially this design was known as 312P, the motorsports press appending the B to avoid confusion with the earlier 312P V12 cars.

The 312 PB debuted tragically at the 1971 Buenos Aires 1000 km, where, sadly, Ignazio Giunti was killed in a collision with the stricken Matra of Beltoise… It did not win a race in 1971, but dominated the 1972 World Sportscar Championship (picture below), and took on Matra a year later.

Notable drivers: Ronnie Peterson, Clay Regazzoni, Brian Redman, Mario Andretti, Jacky Ickx, Arturo Merzario, Sandro Munari, Tim Schenken, Carlos Reutemann and Carlos Pace.
