Jolly good mood
Jolly good mood during the drivers’ briefing ahead of the 1973 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. From left to right, one can recognise Jackie Stewart, journalist José Rosinski, Niki Lauda, Emerson Fittipaldi, Carlos Pace and Jean-Pierre Beltoise.
It was race 3 of 15 in the 1973 Formula One season and the race was won by Jackie Stewart driving a Tyrrell 006-Ford ahead of Peter Revson (McLaren M19-Ford) and Emerson Fittipaldi (Lotus 72-Ford).
This race marked Scuderia Ferrari’s 200th start in a World Championship event as a team, but the 312B3 was not very competitive and Merzario finished fourth, a lap down, while Ickx retired on lap 2.
Denny Hulme’s pole position in his McLaren M23 (picture below) was the only one of his Formula One career. Strange statistic when you know that the New-Zealander was the 1967 World Champion.
