Infidelity

On the 26th of November 1967, Jim Clark appeared for the last time in IndyCar at the “Rex May 300” event, the final race of the championship at Riverside. For the occasion, he was for once unfaithful to the Team Lotus and drove a Vollstedt-Ford that he qualified in second position, behind the Eagle of his friend Dan Gurney.

Jimmy took the lead on lap 24 when a broken valve forced him to stop his car. When someone asked Rolla Vollstedt, owner of the car (picture here under) what had convinced Clark to drive the car, he answered: “I’ve asked him, that’s all.”

The Scottish champion had stayed in California after the Mexican Grand Prix because he couldn’t stay too long in Great-Britain for fiscal reasons. He then gladly accepted Vollstedt’s offer and negotiated a starting fee of a few hundred dollars only…

  1. Pretty sure that race was at Riverside. Don’t believe Indy cars ever ran a sanctioned race at Sebring. Testing, yes…
