A star’s caprice…
Bob Wollek and Thierry Boutsen drove their Joest Racing Porsche 956 perfectly and won the 1983 Monza 1000 kms, counting for the World Endurance Championship. Remarkable achievement, because in doing so, they beat the works Rothmans Porsches.
After more than 5 hours race, Boutsen who’s about to make his F1 debut with Arrows and Wollek, crossed the finishing line more than one minute clear of the works Porsche 956 of Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass while Rolf Stommelen, Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickentanz finished third in the second Joest car.
As one can notice on the picture above, Jacky Ickx is nowhere to be seen on the podium… Some claim that the Belgian champion, in the twilight of his career and bitter of being beaten by his young countryman, didn’t want to be seen (and photographed) on a podium behind another Belgian… A star’s caprice?
