Ayrton Senna made his Formula 1 debut at the 1984 Brazilian Grand Prix (pictured above) held at Jacarepagua near Rio, driving his Toleman TG184-Hart, qualified in 17th position, but was quickly forced to retire (on lap 8) from the race with a broken turbo.

The same race also saw the F1 debuts of two other great hopes, Stefan Bellof and Martin Brundle (photo below), who would later be disqualified, their Tyrrells being deemed not to comply with the regulations.

Alain Prost, driving his McLaren-TAG, won the race, his tenth F1 victory, while Patrick Tambay ran out of fuel on the last lap, lost second place and was ultimately classified fifth, after the Tyrrells were demoted at the end of the season.

Keke Rosberg (Williams-Honda) took the checkered flag in second place, while Elio de Angelis (Lotus-Renault) finished third, having started from pole position. The championship was off to a great start, and the rookies will have the opportunity to prove their talents.
