“Prost is the greatest ever”

During his Formula One career, from 1981 to 1993, Alain Prost, was always paired with excellent and exceptional team mates, like John Watson, René Arnoux, Eddy Cheever, Niki Lauda, Stefan Johansson, Keke Rosberg, Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Jean Alesi and Damon Hill. Impressive list of champions, isn’t it?

Interesting fact: Prost would have never lost to any team mate under today’s point scoring system. Never.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Bernie Ecclestone has given his view on who the best-ever Formula 1 driver is, with him opting against the likes of Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna and Lewis Hamilton.

“It’s difficult to assess,” says Bernie Ecclestone. I believe that Alain Prost was the best. He had to drive with a lot of difficult co-drivers and when the race started he was on his own and had to look after the tyres and everything else. He was exceptional. Today the drivers have their hands held by people in the team, on the pit wall or worse, in the factory in Italy or Britain.”

“Le Professeur” drove in what many consider the Golden Era of F1 in the 80s, where some of the best (Senna, Mansell, Piquet, Lauda, Rosberg…) battled in 1000bhp+ monsters, where safety was still limited. Prost took four titles and 51 Grand Prix victories and is the greatest, according to Mr E at least.
