Crutches and helmets
Mike Thackwell limpin’ on one leg with the help of crutches towards teammate Geoff Lees in the blue Hawke suit, who’s holding both Mike’s as his own helmet. Here-above seen with the #14 Ralt-Honda RH/6 81 in which Lees would win the Pau Grand Prix of 1981.
Mike had returned to racing at Mugello previously, after being injured while testing at Thruxton, but was still suffering from his injuries. Photographer Bernard Cahier in the yellow shirt, smoking his familiar pipe, passes by. Picture-above courtesy of Kubota Tooru.
Geoff Lees had to work hard for the win as Thierry Boutsen was again very fast in his works March 812-BMW, the two being separated by 0.5s only on the finishing line. Third was Italian Piero Necchi in a March-BMW, while Mike Thackwell (picture-below) was one lap down in sixth.
