Eliseo Salazar (ATS D5-Cosworth) resolutely takes the inside line during qualifying for the 1982 United States Grand Prix West run at the Long Beach circuit, while Gilles Villeneuve (Ferrari 126C2) courteously lets him pass (photo above).

The Chilean driver managed to qualify 26th on the grid, just behind his ATS teammate, Manfred Winkelhock. Unfortunately for these two valiant drivers, they were eliminated in the early laps due to collisions, and it was the returning Niki Lauda who took the victory at the wheel of his McLaren MP4/1B, after a thrilling duel with pole-sitter Andrea de Cesaris (Alfa Romeo 182).

Eliseo Salazar will achieve the feat of finishing fifth at Imola, while his teammate Manfred Winkelhock will do the same in Brazil, scoring four points, so important for Günther Schmid’s team. Photo below: Chilean Eliseo Salazar (ATS D5) at the 1982 Monaco Grand Prix.
