Salzburg: Concerto for Jacques Laffite
In 1974, Jacques Laffite competed in the European Formula 2 championship aboard a BP Racing March 742 BMW, after winning in Formula Renault and in Formula 3 (including the prestigious Monaco GP), the previous two years.
Starting on the front row at Salzburg, next to the Chevron of Tom Pryce, “Jacquot” won the race, his first victory in F2, attracting the attention of F1 managers such as Frank Williams.
A few weeks later, Laffite made his debut in F1 at the German Grand Prix on the long Nurburgring aboard one of the Iso-Marlboro cars entered by Williams.
His career will literally take off in 1975 when he won the European F2 championship in a Martini and the Endurance Constructors World Championship for Sports-Prototypes with Alfa Romeo and a first podium in Formula 1 for Williams at the Ring, where his F1 career started (picture below).
