In parallel to his Formula One career with Team Tyrrell, François Cevert participated in endurance racing for Matra. By far, the fastest of the Matra drivers, he, for instance, held for a long time the lap record on the Le Mans circuit.

Cevert also took part in the complete 1973 World Endurance Championship, always with Matra, where he claimed six pole positions and led most of the races, but too often had to retire because of mechanical problems. Nevertheless, he and Jean-Pierre Beltoise succeeded to win the 1973 Vallelunga 6 Hours.
