Niki Lauda is catching up on the news in the cockpit of his McLaren MP4/2, ahead of the 1984 Dutch Formula One Grand Prix at Zandvoort (picture-above).
The race was won by Alain Prost, with teammate Lauda second and Nigel Mansell third in Lotus-Renault. The 1-2 finish secured the Constuctors’ Championship for McLaren, their first since 1974.
The drivers’ championship would go to the last race of the season at Estoril, and Niki Lauda prevailed over Alain Prost by the smallest margin possible, half a point. Prost later said: “Niki was the idol of my youth when I started karting.”
