For the 1976 Le Mans 24 Hours, Porsche introduced its new models, the 936 in Group 6, the 935 in Group 5 and the 934 in Group 4. Therefor, the only challenge for the overall victory came from Renault with it’s turbocharged Renault Alpine A442.

The works Martini-Porsche 935 turbo of Rolf Stommelen and Manfred Schurti finished fourth, easily winning the Group 5 class. Manfred Schurti, seen here-above taking over from team-mate Stommelen, (and portrait below) is a former, very capable, touring cars and sport-prototypes driver from Liechtenstein. He is known for his drives in factory backed Porsches.

Once an initial challenge from Renault was seen off, the 936 of previous winners Jacky Ickx and Gijs van Lennep, built a relentless, inexorable lead that was never challenged. For Ickx it was the third overall victory and for van Lennep the second one.
