Always a special atmosphere

Anderstorp Raceway, previously known as Scandinavian Raceway, is a 4.025 km (2.501 mi) motorsport race track in Anderstorp, Sweden, and the sole Nordic host of a Formula One Grand Prix, when the Swedish Grand Prix was held for six years between 1973 and 1978.

Always a special atmosphere at Anderstorp (picture-above) as Emerson Fittipaldi in his Lotus 72 passes by an airplane parked on the runway next to the circuit, during the 1973 Swedish Formula One Grand Prix.

Anderstorp thus hosted six F1 Swedish Grand Prix events in the 1970s, but when Ronnie Peterson and Gunnar Nilsson died during the 1978 season – the former in a terrible accident at Monza, and the latter from cancer – public support for the event dried up and the Swedish Grand Prix came to an end.

The circuit is also remembered because it was the site of the first and only win of two unconventional F1 cars: the six-wheeled Tyrrell P34 car in 1976 (Scheckter) and the infamous Brabham ‘fan car’ driven by Lauda (picture below, Watson at the wheel). It was also the scene in 1977 of the first Grand Prix victory for Jacques Laffite and the Ligier team.
