Mario Andretti and Paul Newman (picture-above) lean against the latter’s Datsun 280ZX turbo at Riverside in 1981. From the mid-1970s to the early 1990s, Paul Newman drove for the Bob Sharp Racing team, racing mainly Datsuns (later rebranded as Nissans) in the Trans-Am Series.

Newman was a frequent and competent competitor in Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) events, eventually winning four national championships. He later drove in the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans in Dick Barbour’s Porsche 935 and finished in second place (with Dick Barbour and Rolf Stommelen).

At the age of 70 years and 8 days, Paul Newman became the oldest driver to date to be part of a winning team in a major race, winning his class at the 1995 24 Hours of Daytona. He is seen here-below in the mad flame-spitting Datsun 280ZX turbo at the 1981 LA Times Grand Prix at Riverside.
