A torn Ferrari
The Ferrari 250 LM of Pierre Dumay and Gustave ‘Taf” Gosselin in its pits during the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans seems to have suffered quite a bit in its battle, witness its thorn body work. Nevertheless, this privately P. Dumay-entered yellow (the Belgian national colours) 250LM was reliable and well-driven and finished an excellent second overall.
Ford returned to Le Mans with an improved version of its GT and there were a total of 11 Fords or Ford-engined cars in the field. To meet that challenge, Ferrari had no fewer than 12 of their cars on the grid. Despite a strong start, the Fords were again let down by poor reliability and it was an easy victory for Ferrari for the sixth consecutive year.
After all works cars failed, the winners were Masten Gregory and Jochen Rindt in the North American Racing Team (NART) car – the first non-works team to win since Écurie Écosse in 1957.
With the Dumay car in second (see-above) and the Écurie Francorchamps Ferrari 275 GTB of Mairesse-“Beurlys” in third (picture-below), it was nevertheless a triumph for Ferrari.
