A fine field for the 1970 European F2 Championship round, held at the Castellet circuit. Photo above: Tim Schenken (Brabham) ahead of Jacky Ickx (BMW), Jean-Pierre Beltoise (Pygmée), Jochen Rindt (Lotus), Ronnie Peterson (March) and Henri Pescarolo (Brabham).

There was no shortage of hungry young guns in 1970, and they were delighted to rub shoulders with drivers who were already in Formula 1, such as Beltoise, Peterson, Ickx, Regazzoni, etc., and who didn’t hesitate to “go back down” to F2 for a weekend.

Here at the Paul Ricard circuit in Le Castellet, Clay Regazzoni won in his Tecno 70-Cosworth (photo below), ahead of Tim Schenken in his Brabham BT30-Cosworth and François Cevert (Tecno 70-Cosworth). Jacky Ickx, a Ferrari F1 driver who started from pole position, was forced to retire when the engine of his BMW 270-BMW M11 broke down on lap 31.
