Three victories were not enough in 1973 for Emerson Fittipaldi (Lotus 72) to defend his world title against the Tyrrell 006 of Jackie Stewart.

Victories in Argentina, Brazil and Spain early in the year first gave the Brazilian a solid championship lead, but Stewart drove superbly, knowing it would be his last year competing, won 4 races and clinched the championship in Monza (picture below).
