Regazzoni dominates at the Ring
The 1974 German Formula 1 Grand Prix was held at the Nürburgring on 4 August 1974. The race was won by Clay Regazzoni driving a Ferrari 312B3. The Swiss ace led every lap on the way to his second Grand Prix victory, some four years after his debut win at the 1970 Italian Grand Prix, also in a Ferrari.
Niki Lauda (Ferrari) took pole position in 7.00.80, just three tenth faster than team mate Regazzoni. The pair is seen on the picture above, aligned on the starting grid ahead of Scheckter (Tyrrell) and Fittipaldi (McLaren).
Regazzoni’s win, coupled with Lauda’s first lap crash (attempting to pass Scheckter), put the Swiss driver back in the lead of the championship after 11 races (out of 15).
Mike Hailwood (picture below) was another to crash, when he lost control over his McLaren M23 at Pflanzgarten. The former motorcyclist champion sustained a badly broken leg in the accident, which became a career-ending injury.
