Fatal accidents were frequent in the 50s, but Hans Herrmann miraculously survived unharmed, from this horrendous accident at the 1959 Avus Grand Prix in Berlin, when his BRM P25 lost a wheel at high speed…
The German veteran had raced for Mercedes in F1 as early as 1954 in the famous Silver Arrows (picture here-under) and will shine with Porsche until 1970, when he scored, with Richard Attwood, the first overall victory for the German car manufacturer from Zuffenhausen, in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, aboard the legendary 917.
At 92, he lives in the outskirts of Stuttgart.
