The first full face helmets appeared in 1968 with Dan Gurney wearing a Bell helmet first during practice at Zandvoort (driving a Brabham), then in the race at the Nürburgring (at the wheel of his Eagle).
At the time, the helmet manufacturers were experimenting different solutions as you can see here, the Buco helmet with a retractable visor being tried by Jackie Stewart (Matra). The Scot was a strong advocate of improved safety for the drivers since the end of the 60’s.
