Elio de Angelis and Ayrton Senna

Ayrton Senna and Elio de Angelis were team mates for the JPS Team Lotus in 1985. The team showed progress, the 97T designed around the Renault engine by Gérard Ducarouge was competitive, and de Angelis won the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola and Senna won the Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril (picture below) and the Belgian GP at Spa-Francorchamps.

The pairing proved complementary: Senna, with his phenomenal speed and bravery finished in fifth in the Drivers’ Championship with 38 points, while de Angelis was very constant in the points and ended the championship just behind him in sixth with 33 points.
