935’s going crazy

Three Porsche 935s followed each other closely and gave no quarter during the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans (photo above). The Gelo Racing entry of Manfred Schurti/Hans Heyer (DNF) is shown here ahead of the Dick Barbour Racing 935/77A driven by Rolf Stommelen/Paul Newman/Dick Barbour, which would finish an excellent second, and finally the Gelo 935/77A of Jean-Louis Lafosse/John Fitzpatrick/Harald Grohs (retired).

But it was ultimately the Porsche 935-K3 Kremer of Klaus Ludwig, Don Whittington, and Bill Whittington (photo below) that emerged victorious after a masterfully executed race. For Klaus Ludwig, who was impressive in the rain, this was the first of his three Le Mans wins; he would also triumph in 1984 and 1985, again driving Porsches.
