“There are two categories of drivers at Indianapolis,” they say at the rookie briefings on the Speedway. “Those who have hit the wall and… those who are going to hit the wall!”
Nelson Piquet had a bitter experience of this in 1992 during qualifying for the Miles 500 when he violently hit the wall, breaking his legs – bad fractures that still prevent him from walking normally today.
We saw Piquet Sr back on the speedway the following year before a conversion to Touring and GT for BMW.
