Against a tree!
The race of Ludovico Scarfiotti and Mike Parkes and their pretty Ferrari Dino 206 S came to an abrupt halt against a tree during the 1966 Targa Florio, run on the Circuito Piccole delle Madonie in Sicily (photo above by G.Goddard).
This fiftieth edition of the Targa Florio was disrupted by atrocious weather, and much of the roads turned into mud. The winners of the 1965 edition, Nino Vaccarella and Lorenzo Bandini, started as favorites at the wheel of their powerful Ferrari 330 P3, powered by a 4-liter engine.
But Bandini also went off the road while lapping some backmarkers, which opened the way to victory for the 2-litre Porsche 906 entered by Scuderia Filipinetti (supported by the factory) driven by Belgian Willy Mairesse and Swiss Herbert Müller.
Jean Guichet and Giancarlo Baghetti salvaged some pride for Scuderia Ferrari by taking second place at the wheel of the second Dino 206 S entered (photo below). But this runner-up finish did little to console the tifosi, who had turned out in droves to witness the anticipated triumph of the red cars.
