Four pedals and a crash
Jacky Ickx sits in his Lotus 76-Ford before the start of the 1974 South African Grand Prix at the Kyalami circuit. The Belgian qualified in tenth position, six-tenths of a second off the front row, which was occupied by Niki Lauda (Ferrari 312 B3) and Carlos Pace, a surprising second in his Surtees TS16-Ford.
No success in the race for the beautiful single-seater in JPS colours, as the two Lotus 76s of Peterson (photo below) and Ickx, very innovative because they were equipped with four pedals (!) and an electronically operated clutch, collided at the start, in an accident which also eliminated Jochen Mass (Surtees) and Henri Pescarolo (BRM).
Carlos Reutemann won the race at the wheel of his Brabham BT44, his first F1 victory and the first for an Argentinian driver since Juan Manuel Fangio. Jean-Pierre Beltoise, excellent at the wheel of his BRM, finished second, and Mike Hailwood (McLaren) achieved the first podium finish of his career, completing an unprecedented top three.
