Pushing a BRM!

1961 Monaco Grand Prix. Graham Hill pushes his BRM P48/57 towards the pits (photo above). It’s lap 11 and he’s about to retire… fuel pump problem. In the background, you can just make out the Porsche 718 driven by Hans Herrmann, who continues his Grand Prix and will finish 9th.

Graham Hill, who at this stage of his career had not yet won a Grand Prix – he would have to wait until the 1962 Dutch Grand Prix to win in F1 with BRM, the year of his first world championship title – qualified well in fourth position, but his race therefore ended prematurely.

What followed was one of the greatest feats of Stirling Moss’s career, as he, at the wheel of his little Lotus 18-Climax (photo below), outshone the much more powerful Ferrari 156s of Richie Ginther (2nd), Phil Hill (3rd) and Wolfgang von Trips (4th), and won his third Monaco Grand Prix. Fabulous!
