Watkins Glen, United States Grand Prix 1972. Jackie Stewart finishes the season by winning his fourth Grand Prix of the year and thus secures his place as runner-up, behind Emerson Fittipaldi, in the final world championship standings.

As is often the case in the USA, this event has a generous prize pool of $120,000 to be shared, including $25,000 for the winner.

Rain was present for qualifying, and Friday’s practice sessions determined the starting grid. Stewart took pole position with a 0.046s lead over Peter Revson, who was very happy to pocket a check for his performance (photo above).

Of note: Jody Scheckter made his F1 debut with McLaren alongside Denny Hulme and Peter Revson, finishing ninth, while Patrick Depailler (photo below: Bernard Cahier) joined Jackie Stewart and François Cevert at Tyrrell, finishing seventh. Impressive debuts, indeed.
